General Information

The Old Log Church Museum is a small community museum responsible for documenting, preserving and sharing Yukon’s spirited history. We strive to provide our visitors with an enjoyable & educational experience. Located in downtown Whitehorse, the museum is housed in a unique log church built by Reverend R.J. Bowen in 1900 which was recently designated a territorial and municipal heritage site. The museum houses objects used by the early church and its members throughout the territory and offers guided tours on a number of themes.

Job Description

The Heritage Interpreter will serve as an integral part of the Old Log Church Museum team. They will perform museum front line duties including receiving visitors to the museum, collecting admission and orienting visitors, delivering interpretive tours, conducting gift shop sales, and assisting with the presentation of workshops. The Old Log Church Museum offers a number of themed tours to visitors which provide additional interpretive material presented in conjunction with our permanent exhibit displays. The Heritage Interpreter will take on tasks required for the successful running of the museum's gift shop including tracking inventory and sales. Other tasks include posting updates to social media and working with other staff to develop and deliver special event programming (for Canada Day, Discovery Day, etc.). The Heritage Interpreter will also assist the Director/ Curator by completing administrative tasks as required.

Qualifications

·       Strong interest in history, especially Yukon history, as well as an interest in working in museum interpretation and programming.

·       Studying in a related field including but not limited to museum studies, history, education, performance, theatre, anthropology, archaeology, First Nations studies, or tourism.

·       Strong oral and written communication skills.

·       Confident public speaker.

·       Experience conducting research.

·       Strong organizational and time management skills.

·       Office administration and/or filing skills.

·       Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

·       Proficient in the use of computers including MS Office Word and Excel.

·       Experience working with heritage databases and Adobe Suite is considered an asset.

·       Fluency in French, German or another language is considered an asset.

·       First Aid certification is considered an asset.

This position is funded in part by the Young Canada Works program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. YCW criteria states that candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee status in Canada; legally entitled to work in Canada; have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW job and intend to return to full-time studies in the fall. Proof of Covid-19 Vaccination is required.

Necessary training and support will be provided. All summer student positions are 14 weeks in duration, 37.5 hours per week (late May 2022 to early September, 2022).
