Job Description:

The Yukon Church Heritage Society (YCHS) is seeking applicants for the position of Director/Curator on behalf of the Old Log Church Museum. The Old Log Church Museum is a small community museum responsible for documenting, preserving and sharing Yukon’s spirited history. The permanent collection of the OLCM has 5000+ objects in the collection ranging from archival materials to ecclesiastical vestments and artifacts.

As the only full time employee the Director/Curator (D/C) works in partnership and collaboratively with the Board of Directors to provide leadership and management to advance the mission, mandate, vision, values and strategic directions of the museum. The Director/Curator is responsible for the day to day operation of the museum by providing: leadership, policy and standards development, overseeing projects, financial and administrative duties, strategic planning, communications, collections management, exhibition research and management, interpretation management, including education and coordinating the visitor service experience. 

The main responsibilities of the position include

  • Providing administrative (human resources, bookkeeping, etc.) records and duties for the daily operations at the museum

  • Developing policies and procedures as needed 

  • Overseeing the display, storage, security, and preservation and maintenance of the collection including maintaining clear and accurate collection records

  • Writing grants for Municipal, Territorial and Federal funding 

  • Leading the team and coordinating complex projects: such as development of a permanent exhibition 

  • Researching, curating and presenting exhibitions and assisting with research enquiries

  • Documenting and monitoring environmental conditions in display and storage areas

  • Recruiting, training and supervising summer students and contractors

  • Developing a strong and positive working relationship with the YCHS Board (non-profit) and attending monthly meetings, providing status reports and updates as required

  • Working towards enhancing the external position of the museum through collaboration with the local arts and heritage community, business partners and the general public

  • Creating strategies to develop new business opportunities and engage new and broader audience

  • Supporting the implementation of education, public programming and activities 

  • Meeting annual budgetary and operation targets and objectives by monitoring attendance and revenues by developing short and long-term strategies 

  • Acting as the sole representative and spokesperson for the Museum 

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Museum Studies, Museum Management, Curatorial Studies or a related field of study and a secondary degree or coursework in museum studies.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in the cultural heritage field

  • A sound knowledge of Canadian museums standards, ethical practices, policies and procedures.

  • Memberships to museum associations are considered an asset (CMA, OMA, AMA, etc.)

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills

  • Strong administrative and office skills, including some bookkeeping and payroll, Adobe software, Squarespace, and Microsoft Office suite.

  • Ability to use museum database software (Collective Access, Filemaker Pro) 

  • Background in using social media platforms as a marketing and advertising tool

  • A proven track record in writing grant applications, project management and/or executing fundraising activities 

  • Willingness to participate in active engagement with the media, board members, other museum/heritage groups, educational institutions, and museum visitors

  • Experience with organizing, creating and delivering interpretive programming and exhibitions

  • Able to work independently and a be a self-starter 

  • Attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to handle competing priorities

  • A willingness to participate in professional development opportunities

  • Knowledge of Yukon and/or Yukon Anglican Church History is considered an asset
